This research aims to highlight the specific qualities of this manufacturing technique.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I started this work in 2018, as part of the specialized Master&#8217;s degree &#8220;Creation and Contemporary Technology&#8221; at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ensci.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ENSCI &#8211; Les Ateliers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Context<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/reprap.org\/wiki\/RepRap\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><em>RepRap<\/em><\/a> project, founded in 2006, democratizes 3D printing using the principle of <em>Fused Deposition Modeling<\/em> (FDM). Previously, 3D printing, and more generally the digital techniques of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/3D_printing\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">additive manufacturing<\/a>, were reserved for industrial prototyping and research, due to the high cost of machines.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_638\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-638\" style=\"width: 825px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sergepayen.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sergePayen-ZAGproject-FDM.jpg\" alt=\"sergePayen-ZAGproject-FDM\" width=\"825\" height=\"583\" class=\"size-full wp-image-638\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-638\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FDM 3D printing (fused deposition modeling)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This &#8220;democratization&#8221;, made possible by desktop FDM 3D printing, has been at the origin of &#8220;utopias&#8221; linked to the idea of personal digital manufacturing, and to the crossroads of the &#8220;DIY&#8221; and &#8220;Makers&#8221; movements, as well as the emergence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fab_lab\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fablabs<\/a> (cf. Jeremy Rifkin, Chris Anderson&#8230;). But today, almost ten years later, this technology is often associated with the manufacture of uninteresting &#8220;gadgets&#8221;.
